Programme 1: Copy and Paste: The Production of Clay Print Libretti

Before the widespread adoption of photocopiers, mass production of libretti was inhibited.  The number of libretti produced depends on the scale of the troupe and the cast of the play.  Libretti in Cantonese Opera used to be produced in 4 different ways, namely hand copying, clay printing, stencil printing and stereotype printing.  Among these printing methods, clay printing was the simplest and the most cost-effective method, and therefore prevailed throughout the 1930s to 1970s.  In this workshop, under the guidance of our conservators, students can learn the techniques of clay printing as well as the commonly used mounting method for paper artifacts in museums.

Programme 2: Delicate Dyeing: Exploring Textile Production and Fabric Dyeing Techniques

Textiles are closely related to our daily lives.  Have you ever wondered how textile products are made?  And what can we do when they are damaged?  In this programme, our conservators will answer these questions one by one and walk students through actual cases of textile conservation to explore the process of textile production and restoration.  Under our guidance, students will have the opportunity to experience wax resist-dyeing or creating a textile bookmark.
