Asia+ Festival 2024 - The Woven Sounds by Mehdi Aminian Ensemble Pre-performance Talk and Student Performance (Completed)

Asia+ Festival 2024

Presented by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Asia+ Festival" will be rolled out from September to November 2024.

Under the auspices of the National 14th Five-Year Plan, Hong Kong is taking an all-round approach to develop into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange.  "Asia+ Festival" celebrates the cultural diversity of Asia and the Belt and Road regions, showcasing both traditional essences and contemporary facets from the regions.  The festival offers a rich array of events appealing to all tastes, including stage performances, exhibitions, outdoor carnival and film screenings.

Programme Contents

Singing at work is not necessarily a distraction!  On the contrary, work songs are common in different societies: they are sung when fishing, planting crops or sifting grain.  In Iranian culture, rooted in ancient Persian traditions, weavers sing as they knot their carpets.  The melodies, known as Nasqhe-Khani (pattern singing), serve as a guide for carpet patterns among co-weavers.  Iranian ethnomusicologist and musician Mehdi Aminian has dedicated himself to researching and documenting his country's intangible cultural heritage, which is in danger of disappearing.  The Woven Sounds provides a glimpse into this unique tradition: as Aminian and his ensemble play music, they will be joined by a weaver demonstrating pattern singing and weaving on stage, and accompanied by colourful footage of carpet weaving in Iran.  The performance offers the audience a gateway of Persian rich cultural history.
