Session One: Guided Tour for "Lost and Sound - Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)" Exhibition Series

This exhibition comprises three themes: Hong Kong Festivals and Traditional Craftsmanship,  Ordinary Extraordinary, and Sam Tung Uk and Traditional Village Culture.  The exhibition is presented in an innovative way with the use of multimedia.  This guided tour mainly introduces ICH items related to figurines in festivals, including hand puppet Cantonese opera, Chiu Chow sugar loaf making technique and wood carving technique, students can understand the making techniques involved.

Session Two: Drawn Work Figurine Making Technique

Traditional festivals often feature various figurines, some depicting deities and others inspired by classical Chinese stories and mythological figures, commonly seen during deity's birthdays, the Jiao festival and Yu Lan Festival.  These figurines reflect people's respect for the divine and serve ceremonial purposes.  The craftsmanship involved not only has cultural significance but also showcases the craftsman's skills.  One such craft is the "Drawn Work Figurine Making Technique" of Chiu Chow, used primarily as accessories for traditional lanterns and flower-canons, or displayed in a box, has been inscribed on the ICH Inventory of Hong Kong.  This session will demonstrate the making technique of these figurines, introducing students to the forms, materials, tools, and technique involved.  Students can learn about the associated craftsmanship to deepen the understanding of local ICH.
