Let's Cines

Film is not only a kind of entertainment but also a form of art.  The Hong Kong Film Archive has selected ten films which are especially appropriate for students, including engaging and inspiring local animations, feature films that reflect the pulse of the times, and film adaptations of literary classics that align with the new senior secondary Chinese Language curriculum.  Post-screening talks conducted by well-known film critics will further enable students to understand the unique position that film holds in our history and culture.

The Happiness of Living Together

1952 / Comedy / Black & White / Cantonese (Dubbed)* / 93 min

(followed by a post-screening talk)

Skyrocketing property prices have made owning a home in Hong Kong an increasing challenge, and have forced many who have no access to public housing into subdivided flats.  For over half a century, affordable housing has remained a serious problem in Hong Kong.  In the 1950s and 60s, it was very common to see one flat divided into multiple rooms for rent.  Within such cramped conditions, conflicts were unavoidable.  In this film, although separated by a thin wooden board, typist Chen Youqing (Han Fei) and teacher Chen Qiang (Lee Ching) mix like oil and water.  However, with the help of a new tenant (Ella Kiang), the two men eventually settle their differences and learn to be good neighbours.
