Let's Cines

Film is not only a kind of entertainment but also a form of art.  The Hong Kong Film Archive has selected ten films which are especially appropriate for students, including engaging and inspiring local animations, feature films that reflect the pulse of the times, and film adaptations of literary classics that align with the new senior secondary Chinese Language curriculum.  Post-screening talks conducted by well-known film critics will further enable students to understand the unique position that film holds in our history and culture.

In our age of plenty, it may be difficult to imagine the plight of water rationingFrom the 1950s to the early 80s, Hong Kong often had to ration water during periods of drought.  Due to the limited supply of water, if the residents of downstairs lodgings in a tenement building turned on the tap, their upstairs neighbours wouldn't be able to get water. In this grassroots comedy, water rationing threatens the business and livelihood of Congee Man (Wong Cho-shan).  Unbeknownst to him, his downstairs neighbour (Lee Pang-fei) has been storing water for profit.  Fortunately, Paint Bucket (Lau Kwai-hong) is there to lend Congee Man a much-needed helping hand.  A sensitive portrait of everyday hardship during times of water rationing in Hong Kong, the film is also a tribute to the 'Lion Rock spirit' as embodied through acts of generosity, kindness, and mutual support among the working class.
