PAD06 | The Peony Pavilion by Hong Kong Dance Company parent

The programme is offered by Hong Kong Dance Company in support of the "New to the Theatre: School Culture Day Scheme 2025/26".

About the Programme

Cross-Genre Dance Performance: Dance x Kunqu Opera x Cantonese Opera

The classical gardens of Suzhou, which began in the Five Dynasties and flourished through the Song, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, create an enchanting world separate from the outside realm.  Du Liniang, raised in a prominent family and confined to her home, has never encountered any men beyond her relatives.  Within the serene confines of the Peony Pavilion, she dreams of the one she loves, secretly committing to a lifetime together. She muses, "How can one truly appreciate spring's beauty without visiting the gardens?".  As a handsome young man graces her dreams, she realizes that love can blossom in the most unexpected and profound ways.  Upon awakening, however, she confronts the limitations of her dreams; beyond the Peony Pavilion lies a vast world filled with opportunities, yet her aspirations remain unfulfilled.  In 1598, she wrestles with the notion that "the living can die, and the dead can live again," as her dreams fade like a lingering fragrance.  Though a life devoid of dreams may seem tranquil, within every heart lies a hidden Peony Pavilion - a sanctuary of hopes and desires waiting to be brought to life.
