Throughout the 43 years, Chung Ying has staged more than 360 productions, receiving 96 awards in the previous 29 Hong Kong Drama Awards Presentation Ceremony, and has toured to many cities around the world for cultural exchange.

As the first local theatre company to integrate the example of the UK's 'Theatre-in-Education' movement into its work, Chung Ying has hosted over 5 770 schools touring performances, recorded around 900 000 student attendances and has won plaudits from the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies and Hong Kong Arts Development Council.  Chung Ying embraces tertiary institutions, primary and secondary schools and community specific organisations through Drama-in-Education programmes, and inherits local culture with oral history theatre programmes.

Programme Content

Hope is the light in an epoch of darkness.

Written by Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities unfolds a tragedy caused by hatred between the lower class and the nobility on the verge of the French Revolution in the 18th Century.  The only child of the Defarges has been run over by the carriage of the Marquis.  In insurmountable grief, the couple is determined to take revenge on the Marquis' nephew, Charles.

Charles falls in love with Lucie, not aware that her father has been put in jail by the Marquis.  Misfortunes never come singly.  Charles is arrested and sentenced to death because of his noble blood.  When all seems doomed, Sydney steps in.  He changes places with Charles and gives his life instead, out of his love for Lucie, enabling the reunion of the pair.

In an ever-changing time, people may think very little of themselves.  Yet, one should never underrate one's effort as futile.  Sydney knows clearly that his love for Lucie is unrequired, yet he decides to give his life for her.  The noble act is like the most dazzling light that drives away the darkness and hopelessness in Lucie’s world, guides the couple through shadow and despair.

The UK production team has applied a simple, realistic and contemporary approach to reconstruct Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities.  Tour performance of A Tale of Two Cities: Blood for Blood took place in Hong Kong and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe back in 2016 were highly praised.  The Chinese version will be staged in 2023, presenting to the audience a different tale which will arouse their imagination of the time, let them witness again in a theatre the sad and heroic self-sacrifice that fulfils others.
